Committee decides to move Ishigaki AP terminal location

Date Posted: 2001-05-08

The fourth meeting of the local coordination committee on the site of the new Ishigaki Airport was held on May 31 at the Yaeyama branch of the Okinawa Prefectural Office. At the meeting, the committee chairman, Ishigaki City Mayor Nagateru Ohama and twelve committee members decided to change the site of the new airport terminal to the east side of the runway. The change was decided by a majority vote.

At the previous meeting last year, a decision was once made to build the terminal on the west side of the runway, but the community of Shiraho strongly opposed and have been proposing the prefecture to change the terminal site to the east side that is much closer to the central Ishigaki area. They claim that is necessary in order to revitalize the community.

According to the decision, the runway site must move 85 meters to the west. Because of the move, the amount of soil that has to be moved will increase from 160,000 cubic meters to 280,000. A few votes were cast against the plan because of the environmental concerns.
