Rain causes red soil run-off

Date Posted: 2001-05-08

Continuous heavy rain dyed the sea reddish brown off Ogimi Village, Wednesday.

Officials surveying the damage said that a large quantity of red soil poured out from the hills surrounding the village. The affected area was about six kilometers long stretching from Genka to Shioya. Another smaller red soil flow was observed around Tsuha.

Removing the rain forest for agricultural cultivation is considered to be the main cause of the red soil erosion and is one of the main causes destroying coral reefs.
