Date Posted: 2001-05-08

Minister of Okinawa and Northern Territories Koji Omi visited Okinawa Sunday night for the first time since taking the post. He paid a visit to the Prefectural Office Monday morning where he met with Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine.

During the meeting the Governor handed Omi a letter demanding the reduction of Marines stationed on the island, cooperation on the 15-year limit on the MCAS Futenma’s relocation facility and reconsideration of Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement.

The minister replied that he would make his best effort to realize positive agreements through the Special Action Committee on Okinawa.

The minister also held a public meeting in a hotel in the afternoon, and said the government should not cut financial subsidies and support for Okinawa.
