JGSDF helicopter disrupts school class in Katsuren

Date Posted: 2001-05-08

A CH-47 helicopter stationed at the Japanese Ground Self Defense Forcesí Camp Katsuren conducted a take-off and landing maneuver within the camp Tuesday afternoon. Because of the noise from the helicopter, the fifth grade class at nearby Yokatsu High School was temporarily interrupted.

Responding top a complaint from the school officials, JGSDF explained that they had moved the location of the helipad as they built a new building. The new helipad was much closer to the school than the old one, which possibly caused the increased noise. Military officials presented a formal apology to the school the same day.

Officials at the school said that military planes and helicopters are frequently flying over the school, but they said this time the noise was exceptionally loud.
