Tuna season at peak

Tuna fishing season is in full swing. Naha City’s Tomari Fishing Port has lately been the hub of activity, as a number of big tuna fish weighting around 180 kilograms each have been brought in.

The tuna fishing season in Okinawa runs from April through June when the big fish come to the waters around Okinawa following the Kuroshio ocean current. At other seasons, the giant tuna valued at more than ¥1 million per each fish is shipped to expensive restaurants in mainland Japan but this is the seasons for Okinawan people to enjoy the delicacy.

Officials at the Okinawa Fisheries Association are promoting local people to buy tuna at this time of the year when its price not so expensive.
