Headquarters & Service Battalion offers scholarships to students and Marines

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

The Headquarters and Service Battalion, Camps Foster and Lester Association, is awarding scholarships to promote Camps Foster and Lester as integral parts of the local and military communities. A video contest will take place for high school students, and a free luncheon and scholarship banquet will be held for Marines. This is an excellent opportunity for all college-bound students to save a significant amount of money while pursuing a higher education.

Seniors enrolled and attending high school on Okinawa with a minimum grade-point average of 2.5 who are dependent family members of an active duty Marine or sailor stationed on Okinawa are eligible to participate in a video contest. The theme of this contest is “What have you learned and benefited from by living on Okinawa and attending high school here?” Winning entries will be aired on Channel I13, and prizes are as follows: First prize scholarship $1,500; second prize scholarship $1,000; third prize scholarship $750; three honorable mention scholarships $500.

Entries will be judged on the ability to capture the theme on video, artistic and technical proficiency, and adherence to all contest rules. All entries are due no later than April 30, and winners will be announced at a luncheon on May 14 at the Butler Officers’ Club in Plaza Housing at noon. This luncheon will be free for all eligible entrants who submit their entries before the deadline.

A special free luncheon and scholarship opportunity is also taking place for active-duty Marines attached to the Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base. To be eligible for one of 10 $200 scholarships, Marines must be registered for the current semester of college in one or more classes and have been enrolled in the immediately preceding semester, receiving a grade of A or B. To apply for the scholarship, submit a copy of your grade slip from the previous semester with the registration form for the current semester and a scholarship application. Entries are due no later than March 1, and winners will be notified at a free luncheon at the Camp Foster Staff NCO Club on March 7 at noon. Though applicants will receive a free lunch, all guests will have to pay for their own meal. After lunch, there will be a guest speaker, and then a random drawing will award the winners with their scholarship prizes.

Tickets for family members and friends of entrants and association members will be sold on a first come, first served basis through the association, but guests do not need to purchase tickets in advance for this luncheon. There will be great door prizes raffled off to those who come support a Marine that entered the contest and a special prize for the section that shows the most support. Tickets for the high school scholarship luncheon are required to be purchased in advance before May 10 for guests; however, tickets for the Marine luncheon do not need to be purchased in advance and can be purchased when submitting your entry in person or by contacting GySgt Ellen Elkins at 645-3813 or 645-5560. Reservations will be limited for guests, so be sure to plan in advance. Entries can be submitted in person at Building 5685 on Camp Foster or by MPS mail to the following address:
