Excessive mercury, arsenic found in wells

The Prefectural Council of Environment convened Friday. At the meeting, officials reported that they had detected mercury and arsenic at more than regulated levels at several locations in the water quality inspection conducted in 99. The maximum level of mercury was fifteen times as much as the regulatory limit and arsenic was found at sixteen times the limit.

Officials explained that they could not find the source. Mercury was found at four different wells in Okinawa and Gushikawa Cities, and arsenic from eight wells in Urasoe, Okinawa, and Ishikawa Cities and Yonashiro Town.
