Consumer complaints on rise

Date Posted: 2001-06-01

The Prefectural Life Center has published its annual report on the number of requests for advice and complaints that it received from consumers last year.

According to the report, the total number of contacts with the center was 6,394. The number is 1,118 more than previous year. The most common requests totaling 868 were related to unsecured consumer loans. The most increased field was Internet services. People especially complained that they were charged a connection fee without notice while watching porno sites.

A director at the center, Eiko Nagahama is warning consumers to be especially careful with door-to-door and telephone sales schemes. He urges people to be smart shoppers, and to utilize the cooling-off period the commercial law grants to buyers in case of trouble with contracts.
