Fog Strands Passengers

Date Posted: 2001-06-01

Dense fog appeared Sunday around Okinawa and caused much confusion, especially at Naha Airport. This year already five dense fog cautions have been officially announced, the most in the past five years. Affected by fogs and the typhoon that hit awhile ago, the total number of flight cancellations has been 328, increasing from 163 last year.

Because of fog on Sunday, JAL flight 905 from Tokyo could not land on Naha Airport and was diverted to Kadena AB. All passengers had to stay onboard for three hours and were eventually returned to Tokyo. There was nothing that the 617 passengers could do but stay locked in the plane, nine hours total. According to a JAL spokesman, proceedure dictates that if a plane is diverted to another airport and the flight is delayed, passengers would have to leave the plane. However, Kadena AB is considered abroad, so the passengers were not allowed to disembark.
