Boars wreaking havoc on Oki pineapple farms

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

Wild boars have been causing an increasingly alarming amount of damage to pineapple farms this season in Takae, Higashi Village, eating the sprouts that would eventually have become fruit. According to farmer Yoshikichi Takaesu, although the animals have inflicted damage on the crop in the past, this year’s destruction is the worst he has seen in his 20 years of farming. He had tried covering his fields with fishing net to prevent the boars from entering, but they broke through the protective covering in their quest for food. Farmers and officials are at their wits' end trying to figure out how to protect the pineapples from the hungry intruders.
