Swords, flag return home following 57-year absence

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

The Ryukyu America Historical Research Society has been instrumental in securing the return to Okinawa of a number of items that a U.S. Marine had taken home with him after the Battle of Okinawa. Included in the collection are two katana, or Japanese swords, measuring 66.9 centimeters and 65.2 centimeters each, 20 decorations and a Japanese flag containing the names of numerous individuals. The society will keep the flag and decorations for return to the original owners when ascertained; the swords were presented to the prefectural museum and will be on display starting July 23. Richard Freddy, the Marine who took them to the United States 57 years ago, had already passed away, but the society was aided in bringing them home to Okinawa due to the intent expressed in the deceasedís will.
