Mongoose threatens Yambarukuina habitats

Date Posted: 2001-05-25

Officials at Okinawa Prefecture and Yamashina Bird Institute reported Monday that the habitat of Yanbarukuina is decreasing. The research covered the birdís known habitats all around the northern Okinawa, including Kunigami, Higashi and Ogimi Villages, and lasted five months ending last March.

The researchers could not find any of the birds at Ogimi Village. They say that this almost certainly proves that they have disappeared from areas in all Ogimi and a part of Higashi Village south of Fukuchi Dam. The research showed that mongooses are encroaching the habitats of Yanbarukuina since there were hardly any sign of the birds within the area where mongooses were caught during the extermination campaign conducted by the prefecture. Yanbarukuina is a fligtless bird and is officially designated as a rare species in danger of extinction. The researchers could confirm that the number of the birds is at least 315.
