Neighbors find elderly man dead in apartment

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

A 65-year-old man was found dead in his apartment in Okinawa City on Feb. 20. He lived alone and is believed to have died approximately one week ago. According to an autopsy performed by authorities, the man died from a previously existing illness. On the night of Feb. 20 a neighbor reported to the city office that a strange odor was emanating from the manís apartment. Since the door was locked, firefighters entered through a window on the third floor and found the deceased lying on his stomach. The man, who was suffering from heart disease, had occasionally invited friends over for a drink but seldom contacted his son or two daughters. His neighbors were shocked by the fact that they had witnessed this kind of death in familiar surroundings and rather than on the evening news. According to a prefectural study, as of October 2001there were 32,493 households in Okinawa with a person 65 years of age or over living alone, accounting for approximately 20 percent of all households having elderly people.
