Hong Kong movie shot in Okinawa to premier in July

Date Posted: 2001-05-18

About a year ago movie fans, especially those who are fond of Hong Kong movies and stars, got in a pleasant surprise by the news that movie “Okinawa Rendez-vous,” a Hong Kong production, would be filmed in locations in Okinawa.

The casting included three of Hong Kong biggest stars; Leslie Chang, Fay Wong and Leon Carfay. The three could be considered as something like Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt starring in a Hollywood movie. Gordon Chang, a well-known action movie director, was directing.

The producers also decided to shoot the film on locations in Okinawa. As is often the case in Hong Kong, the movie was filmed without any pre-arrangements whatsoever even in Okinawa. A bit like shooting from the hip.

The filming took place in Manza Beach Resort and Motobu Town, where tourists and locals were recruited to act as extras on the spot. The moviemakers also raised some eyebrows as they never paid any attention to complaints from residents when filming at all kinds of odd hours. The whole shooting was over in a couple of weeks.

Those who were hired as extras, were left eagerly waiting to see the results. As it turns out, the film was not a big hit in Hong Kong when it reached the theaters last year, but at least it contributed to promoting of Okinawa. Maybe the casting was appropriately on holiday mood. The film will be showing in Okinawa theaters in July.
