Date Posted: 2001-05-18

The Bank of Okinawa Research and Marketing Group announced Thursday that the number of new residential buildings built last year in Okinawa was 12,692, 1.4 percent more than the previous year.

The biggest increase was in houses built was for the purpose of rent, and among those, Naha City had the highest increase of 25.8 percent as the city is developing a new residential area in Ameku New Center in Naha. The public investment in residential buildings fell steeply by 20.8 percent, whereas the number of new privately-owned rental buildings increased by 4.3 percent. At the same time, the number of new private homes decreased. Analysts say that the reason is salaries did not increase as the local economy remained stagnant.
