Civil servants found bilking prefecture government

Date Posted: 2001-05-18

An anonymous tip lead to the discovery, Thursday, that three workers in Okinawa General Bureau had received money by falsely claiming funds for a business trip in March last year that never took place.

The civil servants claimed that they had planned the trip to Tokyo and took 545,000 cash advance for it but then for some reason or another, the trip was canceled. They said that they forgot about the money that was stashed away in the desk drawer of one of the three. When the matter came up, they returned the cash immediately.

The General Bureau organized a public meeting the same day, and Director Masanobu Yoshida deeply apologized for the incident.

It was also discovered that a former director, Hiroshi Koyama had reportedly received a discount air ticket from one of the airlines for a trip but claimed the full price of the airfare in his travel expense report. He then reportedly used the excess money for his private needs. He reportedly admits the charge but says that he sees nothing wrong with him doing so.
