Lettuce thief nabbed after year and half on lam

Date Posted: 2001-05-18

A 47-year old man was arrested on suspicion of stealing lettuce from a field in November ’99.

According to the Prefectural Police, the man and his 33-year old accomplice stole six boxes of lettuce worth ¥18,000 from a field in Kochinda Town, and then sold the vegetables to a supermarket in Tomishiro Village at a cheap price. He said that he stole the lettuce because he needed money fast.

Itoman Police arrested his accomplice in January last year and the suspect had been on the wanted list since then. The man admits the charge and told investigators that he had been moving around Okinawa’s other islands for a year and a half in order to avoid his arrest. He reportedly added that in retrospect it would have been much easier, and cheaper, to face the charges right away.
