Season’s first typhoons whistles over Okinawa

Date Posted: 2001-05-18

This year’s first typhoon named Cimaron, hit Okinawa Monday. The storm caused some delays in air traffic, and some small damage in Okinawa’s main island and Miyako.

In Naha, a landslide occurred Monday afternoon at Shikina Garden Heights where some concrete walls collapsed. A warehouse next to the landslide was damaged but no one was injured. Because of a possibility that the landslides would extend to surrounding areas, city officials and the police ordered residents to evacuate. Five families had to stay in Naha Civic Hall overnight. They are scheduled to move temporarily to city-owned housing Tuesday.

The Prefectural Office announced that the agricultural industry in Miyako Island suffered damages totaling ¥77 million.

According to Okinawa Electric Power Company, electricity shut down at around three thirty Monday, in most of Kunigami Village and in part of Higashi Village affecting some 4,700 houses.

At Naha Airport, a total of 109 flights were cancelled affecting over 20,000 passengers. One of the tourists at the airport said that he had planned to swim in the beautiful Okinawan sea, but it rained when he arrived, and the typhoon came when he had to leave. His holiday was definitely not what he had expected.
