Japan suffers from May sickness

In Japan, springtime depression is often called ”May sickness,” as people are often said to be most depressed at that time of the year.

There are several reasons for the depression to peak at that time. All schools and colleges in Japan start from April. Likewise, new recruits in large companies start April 1. All this has taken plenty of cramming and study that puts pressure on people. Then comes “Golden Week,” a string of national holidays that allows most workers and students to take off several days in a row. When they have to go back to work, that’s when the depression hits.
