Dugong to become officially rare species

Date Posted: 2001-05-10

The Ministry of Environment announced on Thursday that they would designate dugongs as rare species to protect them within this year.

The officials say that they are also considering to designating the habitat of dugongs and to regulate development in the area. Quite a few dugongs have been seen in the sea off Henoko in Nago City, the planned relocation site of MCAS Futenma. This announcement is bound to cause some controversy in relation to the facility as whether or not to construct the heliport if the area is designated as an official habitat. The number of dugongs that live in the seas around Okinawa are reportedly around fifty.
