Gangsters arrested in fictitious graveyard scam

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

The Prefectural Police Department and the Yonabaru police on Feb. 25 arrested three members of a gangster group including its leader on charges of fraud. They were questioned about having swindled money from the representative of a gardening firm in Haebaru Town. About 60 investigators searched seven locations including the groupís headquarters looking for documents. The three suspects reportedly denied the charges. According to the police investigation, the suspects convinced the garden representative to manufacture a fictitious graveyard and bilked him out of •4.75 million in cash with a promise to award a contract to the gardening firm. The conspirators had fabricated several stories to support their claims, saying that they already owned the land for the graveyard and that they were able to secure loans from financial entities.
