Number of children in Japan decreases

The Ministry of Public Management published its estimate of the population of Japan, Friday. According to the estimate, the number of children aged under fifteen years totaled about 18 million, which is 240,000 less than last year. As a result, the percentage of children within the total population was the lowest on record with 14.7 percent.

Among the nationís prefectures, Okinawa ranked the first place with 19.5 percent of its population under 15, whereas only 12.5 percent of Tokyo residents are children.

Italy has the smallest percentage of children in the world in its population, 14.5 percent.
