Four men accused of poaching planted shellfish

Date Posted: 2001-05-10

Ginoza Fishermen’s Association is accusing four men of violation of fishing rights, Tuesday.

The men had reportedly caught about 20 kilograms of conchs, sea urchins and giant clams without required permission, Friday, within an area where the association has exclusive fishing rights.

The association had released the creatures to the area two years ago, and they were about to be harvested. A member of the association discovered the men as they were collecting the shellfish, and reported them to the Maritime Safety Agency officials.

According to the association, they have suffered from illegal fishing, and their total losses amount to over a million yen since the beginning of the year. Officials say trouble over fishing rights occur a few times a year between professional fishermen, but it is rare to have ordinary citizens to be caught for poaching.
