Convenience Store Robberies Double

Date Posted: 2000-10-27

The number of 24-hour convenience stores being the target of robbery has increased two-fold in a year, according to statistics released by the Okinawa Prefecture Police. The main reason is the proliferation in the number of such stores.

The Okinawa Prefecture Convenience Store Managers’ Association recently issued a plea to the police for increased protection of the stores. They especially requested more patrols by the police in their neighborhoods.

The Okinawa Prefectural Police held a meeting over the problem Tuesday, mapping out the reasons and possible remedies. The police concluded that almost all of the reported robberies take place between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. when the stores are manned entirely by part-time staffers, many of whom have no training. They also often are alone in the store.

Police also have found that the store clerks lack basic knowledge on how to ensure that the store’s security cameras work properly, or even how to call police in an emergency.
