Bird sanctuary planned for Kin’s Okukubi River

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

The Prefectural Council for Conserving the Natural Environment on Feb. 19 approved a proposed plan promoting the protection of birds in the Kin Town and northern Okinawa areas. According to the plan, 89 hectares of land surrounding the lower reaches of the Okukubi River in Kin Town will be designated as a new bird sanctuary in the year 2003. The plan also includes consideration for expanding an existing sanctuary in Okinawa’s northern forest due to the reserve’s small size and disjointed layout, making it difficult for birds to breed there. Although an opinion was put forward by a citizens’ group to designate the Awase tidelands in Okinawa City as a sanctuary, it was not included in the proposal because permission had already been given as regards the tidelands.
