Residents Oppose JSDF Incinerator Plans

Date Posted: 2000-10-27

The planned rebuilding of a trash burning facility at Nakagusuku Village is irking local residents, who say that the operation of the plant would adversely affect their quality of life. They voiced their opposition to the plan and claimed that the current facility is bad enough. Building the new one on the same site would make things worse.

They are also opposing the fact that the funds for the new incinerator would come from the Japanese Defense Agency, as it would also handle all trash from Camp Foster area.

The construction of the new facility is scheduled to start in December and is expected to take two years to complete. Meanwhile, the residents are adamantly insisting on finding a new location. The deadline for a final agreement is the end of November.
