Fog stops flights from landing in Naha

Date Posted: 2001-05-04

A dense fog, a rather exceptional phenomenon here, covered Okinawa Monday morning as a front of thunderstorms and rain passed over the island.

Flights scheduled to arrive at Naha airport in the morning could not land and all departures and arrivals had to be concentrated in the afternoon hours. Apart from delayed flights, a total of 57 flights, including international flights were cancelled. The delays and cacellations affected over 28,000 passengers. Some flights were rerouted to airports in Kyushu, while some arrived over six hours late.

The dense fog also caused accidents on the sea. A dive boat ran aground on a reef in the morning nine kilometers off Naha Port. No one was hurt in the accident. Off the coast of Kin Town, one fisherman was reported missing after he failed to return from his fishing trip. His boat was later found one kilometer offshore. The man is still missing. At a point 30 kilometers off Kudaka Island, a fishing boat and a pleasure boat collided. No injuries were reported but some each boat sustained damages.
