Anti-Base Demonstrators Meet in Park

Date Posted: 2000-10-27

Organizers say that 2,000 people took part in a demonstration at Yogi Park, Naha City, Saturday. The demonstrators demanded that the plan to construct a new heliport replacing the MCAS Futenma be abandoned. The police put the number of demonstrators at a few hundred. The demonstration is a tradition that takes place on October 21.

Many of those who took part lamented the lack of interest in the demonstration that five years ago attracted more than 82,000. “People are growing apathetic and it is difficult to make them enthusiastic,” one organizer admitted. “They see no effect, as a matter of fact it looks like the presence of the bases has grown. It feels so futile,” he said. Many other people said that the era of big demonstrations have passed and it is no use trying to organize them any more.
