Marine produce decreased in 2000

Date Posted: 2001-05-04

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at Okinawa General Bureau has published its annual report on the amount of marine products produced in Okinawa in the year 2000.

According to the report, the total production was 38,035 tons, which is nearly 13 percent less than the previous year. A big decrease in oceanic aquaculture produce is for most part the reason for the steep fall. The report states that during last year, fewer sunny days than average, and continuous rain are the main causes. The harvest of aquaculture products in the prefecture fell as much as by 21 percent. The most severely affected product was ‘mozuku,’ a kind of seaweed popular in local diet.
