Groups Unpaid After Music Promoter Vanishes

Date Posted: 2000-10-27

Performers who played in June in the World Okinawa Business Association organized event say that none of them have been paid as of today. The event had a budget of 7 million for the performances, but the money has disappeared. Promoters who organized the concerts also seem to have vanished.

Six groups performed at the World Music Festival 2000 at Okinawa Convention Center on June 17. After the concert, the promotion agency that had been contracted by the Okinawa Prefecture Government to organize the event told the groups that it would take a few days for them to get the money from the prefecture.

When they called the agency a few weeks later, the telephone was disconnected. Officials at the World Okinawa Business Association have contracts and receipts proving that they paid the agency as agreed, and are not responsible for the money any more. A lawyer representing the six performer groups say that his clients are now thinking of suing the agency. The problem is that they have to find it first.
