Okinawa’s only elephant dies

Date Posted: 2001-05-04

Okinawa’s only elephant died Wednesday at the Okinawa Children’s Land zoo in Okinawa City.

The male elephant, named Bebe, had been in the zoo for over 18 years, and he was a symbol of the zoo.

Park officials were all surprised and saddened by his sudden death. Bebe was found lying on the ground with his feet shaking when a keeper came to his cage Tuesday morning. He had shown no unusual symptoms until then. Despite the staff’s best efforts and treatment, Bebe could not recover and passed away the following evening.

Bebe came to Okinawa from Nagoya in ’83, and he was about 60 years old.
