Few Returns at Naha Airport Duty Free Shops

Date Posted: 2000-10-27

Business is worse than anyone expected at the duty free shops at Naha Airport. The shops report that sales amount to only 18 percent of what was expected. Prefecture authorities that are responsible for the operation are currently trying to analyze the reasons for the poor performance.

The shops were originally set up following recommendations after a special law for Okinawan development was enacted in April 1998. The law is slated to expire in 2002, but prefecture officials are requesting that the law be extended in order to give the business more time to develop.
