Squid Swim Habits Transmitted to Fishermen

Date Posted: 2000-10-27

Okinawa Prefecture Fishery Agency has conducted an extensive survey of the living habits of squid in local waters. The survey was conducted by attaching transmitters in live squid that were then released back into the ocean. The researchers were then able to follow the squid as they moved about.

The survey revealed that they usually moved along the ocean currents, diving as deep as 200 meters during the day and rising up to the depth of 80 to 50 meters in the night. The survey also found that the squid moved as slowly as possible, using their energy only when they had to escape a predator. The survey results will help fishermen to find squid more easily when they set out to sea.
