Date Posted: 2001-05-04

The Okinawa Labor and Peace Federation that consists mainly of local labor unions, held a large rally Wednesday evening at Yogi Park, Naha City. According to organizers some 4,000 people attended the event to demand for a reduction of Marines stationed in the prefecture.

At the rally, the federation released a resolution stating that Okinawa has suffered from a series of incidents caused by U.S. forces for over half a century. Specifically, the resolution calls for a reduction of the number of the Marines, the main element of the U.S. forces stationed on the island.

The federation is also collecting signatures from people throughout Japan for a resolution demanding both U.S. and Japanese Governments take steps to reduce the forces. The federation says that their campaign has so far collected 1.4 million signatures, 300,000 of them from Okinawa.
