Naha officials driving under influence to be dismissed

Date Posted: 2002-02-28

The City of Naha on Feb. 20 announced that as of April 1 any city official found driving under influence of alcohol regardless of amount would be dismissed from service. Mayor Takeshi Onaga said that the system was being initiated not for the purpose of punishing individuals but rather to help all employees fully understand that driving while intoxicated is not acceptable. He also said that it was intended to tighten up Okinawa’s road-regulation enforcement, which is said to be lenient on drunk drivers. Despite the fact that the police cannot always easily ascertain if an offender is a city official or not, according to Onaga the city will closely cooperate with the police to develop a system for properly identifying the person.
