Bugs Destroy Thousands of Trees

Date Posted: 2000-10-21

Bugs are eating Ryukyu Pine forests in the northern parts of the island, turning them brown in large numbers. Trees in Kunigami and Henoki are especially hard hit according to officials at the Prefecture Forestry Bureau. While the bureau survey found 160 affected trees in June, the number had swollen to 6,000 in September.

Kunigami Village officials say that the situation is getting so bad that urgent action by prefecture officials is needed. They also say that the earlier efforts to control the pests came too late, as spraying from a helicopter killed the bugs, but they had already laid their eggs that later hatched and are now wreaking havoc in the area.
