Japanese and US Govts to be Sued Over Dugongs

Date Posted: 2000-10-21

A group of 30 Japanese lawyers are planning to sue the government in Japanese courts in order to protect Okinawan dugongs that reportedly inhabit the waters around Henoko, the area where the replacement facitlity for the MCAS Futenma is to be constructed.

The group plans to file the suit in the beginning of the new year. The same group announced two days ago that they are suing the U.S. Department of Defense in American courts for the same purpose.

The group believes that their lawsuit will delay and even put an end to the planned construction project that was included in the SACO agreements between the governments.

However, he group needs to commission extensive scientific studies about dugongs and their habitats in the waters off Okinawa to press their case. Such extensive studies have never conducted before.
