San-A Sales Up Ė Plans for Huge New Store

San-A supermarket chain reported an increase of 11.8 percent in the total sales over its latest half of the fiscal year. The chainís shares went public last month, and paid a dividend of •10 per share to its shareholders a month later. The biggest increase in the groupís sales comes from its new large-scale stores. The company also operates a successful chain of restaurants specializing in pork dishes.

San-A is currently engaged in an aggressive expansion program. The new flagship of the company will be a huge shopping complex, complete with movie theaters, restaurants and an amusement park, currently under construction in the new Naha City center in Ameku. When completed in 2002, the complex will have over 100 tenants, making it the largest shopping mall in Okinawa.

San-Aís name recognition in Okinawa is such that it is said that local children quarreling with their parents are said to threaten to trade them with better parents at the local San-A supermarket.
