Lepers to Sue Japanese Government

Date Posted: 2000-10-21

Sufferers of Hansenís Disease, also known as leprosy, who were previously forcibly interned in asylums are suing the Japanese Government for violating their human rights.

In Okinawa there used to be two such asylums, one on Miyako Island and the other in Nago, both now closed. Their elderly former patients say that they were forcibly held in the asylums against their will, subjected to forced abortions, and during the war routinely told that should Japan win, they would be drowned into the ocean as the imperial Japan would not need such useless people.
