Festival Commemorates Chinese Shipwreck

Date Posted: 2000-10-21

The traditional Kannon Festival was held first time in five years, Sunday, on the tiny island of Ohjima off Tamagusuku Village. The festival was established 385 years ago when a Chinese trading ship ran aground during a typhoon off the island and the islandís inhabitants helped to rescue the crew.

The Chinese emperor then sent a gift of a statue to the island. The island people then started an annual festival to celebrate the event. The peculiar feature of the festival is that only women dance in the parade during the festival, and they use white taiko drums instead of red drums commonly used in festivals in Okinawa.
