Environmentalists Slam Reclamation Project

Date Posted: 2000-10-21

Participants of the International Wetland Symposium held at Okinawa City Agricultural Center over the weekend have criticized the land reclamation project currently under way at Awase Port, saying that although the project will have a major impact on the environment, no assessment on possible damage has been made.

The participants say that Awase is home to seven different kinds of seaweed found nowhere else, and the reclamation project poses a grave threat to their existence. The symposium criticized Okinawa City and the prefecture on their less than satisfactory record on environmental issues.

Okinawa City Mayor Masakazu Nakasone defended the city project at the symposium, saying that the land reclamation project in Awase was extremely important for the city’s economic future. However, participants stated that wetlands are very important for the environment, and destroying them impacts human populations adversely in the long run.
