Typhoon Damaged Tangerine Harvest Starts

Date Posted: 2000-10-13

The tangerine harvest has started officially in orchards in the northern parts of Okinawa from Oct. 8. The harvest will go on through the end of January. Because several different varieties of tangerines growing in Okinawa ripen at different times, the season will stretch over four months.

Growers say that this year’s crop is not so good because of damage caused by typhoons that hit the island during the growing season. The farmers are inviting people to come pick up their own tangerines. Those that they eat on the premises are not counted when paying for their picks.

Many local families visit the tangerine orchards during the harvest season picking up a few bags of the fruit at bargain prices while also having a fun time picnicking in the lush surroundings.
