52 junior high students from a Japanese School in Taipei came to Okinawa from October 4 to 7 to study the historical relationship between Taiwan and Okinawa. One of the historical sites they visited in Naha was the tomb of some Okinawans whose ship had drifted onto a beach in southern Taiwan in 1871. They were then killed by the locals. This incident was used as an excuse for the Japanese government to send troops to Taiwan. The students’ guide, Seisyo Masayoshi, curator of Urazoe Museum, said “This incident dramatically changed not only the history of Okinawa, Japan, and Taiwan, but also the whole Asia.”
