Saving Okinawan Language from Extinction

Date Posted: 2000-10-13

On October 21, “The Okinawan Language Preservation Association” will be established. Linguists fear the language faces extinction as all its practitioners are now old people. To counteract this, language classes will be set up using old lecturers. The 15 members of the association include Okinawan Language Newscasters and professors. They believe dialects are necessary to preserve histories and cultures. A first meeting of the association will take place at Urazoe Social Hall on October 21, starting at 14:00. For more information call: 895-8252 Professor Miyara.
