Illegal Car Dumping Researched

More than 10,000 cars have been illegally dumped in Okinawa and surrounding islands. The latest research, published October 3, found the problem was worst on the offshore islands. The government has disposed of 1805 illegally abandoned cars, while tracing 822 owners.

Reasons for the problem of illegal dumping were identified as follows. There are no facilities for getting rid of old cars. Scrap metals have decreased in price. It is expensive to dismantle old cars. There is widespread ownership of used cars.
