Scandal Plagued Linerís Last Docking

Date Posted: 2000-10-13

Cruise liner Star Aquarius made its last port call in Okinawa, Tuesday. The ship had carried 260,000 tourists from Taiwan to Okinawa during the past year. Star Cruises, Asiaís largest cruise liner operator, decided to pull the plug, citing large losses that the ship had accumulated and most of all the lack of suitable port facilities in Okinawa that the shipís operators blamed for declining passenger counts. The cruise ship was also plagued with bad publicity including robbery, blackmailing and prostitution that had allegedly taken place on board.

Okinawa tourism officials say they regret the decision of the company and promise to continue negotiating in hopes to secure regular visits by perhaps a smaller cruise liner.
