Warnings on Island’s Environment Destruction

Date Posted: 2000-10-13

Members of the Switzerland based World Conservation Union (IUCN) have decided at a meeting held in Amman, Jordan, Wednesday, to issue a warning against the destruction of the habitat of Okinawa’s indigenous animals living in the northern parts of the island. The warning also includes dugongs that are threatened by the proposed construction of the new sea-based heliport in Henoko, Nago City.

The IUCN delegates issued the warnings in letters sent to the governments of Japan and the United States. The letters urge both governments to conduct a thorough investigation into the environmental impact of the proposed construction and take every possible step to ensure that the endangered animals survive.

The organization has sent a letter to the Japanese Government before, cautioning about the environmental impact of the proposed new Ishigaki Airport that is still on the drawing board after 23 years of wrangling between opponents and proponents.
