Patients Won’t Pay - Hospitals Deep in Debt

Okinawa Prefecture owned hospitals are sinking ever deeper in the red, according to figures covering fiscal 1999, released by prefecture officials last week. They point out that the biggest reason for the increasing deficit is the refusal of patients to pay their hospital bills.

The hospitals themselves are now in debt to the tune of ¥3.4 billion. The increasing debt is forcing hospitals to postpone or cancel needed renovations and purchase of equipment. Hospital administrators say that sooner than later this will worsen patient care.
