Dugong Protectors Present Case Abroad

Date Posted: 2000-10-06

A group of members of the Okinawa Dugong Protection Committee, led by Shintoku Kamura, left for Jordan to appeal to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). They are planning in their appeal to stress the importance of the protection of the dugong and other rare species in Okinawa. The group is not a member of IUCN, but is planning to personally lobby members of the IUCN and stage a photo exhibition.

On September 30, the Japan Mammals Research Group suggested that the Defense and Environmental Agencies set up a safe water area for dugongs in Okinawa prefecture. The group did not specifically name Camp Schwab in its petition, but hopes to stop some military exercises in the area that they consider are having a bad effect on dugongs.
