Rent Free Deal Opens Closed Stores

Date Posted: 2000-10-06

There are many closed and empty shops in Okinawa’s older shopping areas that have gone out of business. At the same time there are people willing to start new businesses. In order to match the two, Naha Chamber of Commerce has created a system to help new shop owners get started. According to the plan people who want to start a new business can rent empty shops in designated areas, free for a certain period.

In a ceremony held at Naha’s Heiwa Dori Shopping arcade, a number of new stores opened Monday as a result of the new initiative. The new shops included those selling Chinese pottery baseball equipment and health food. The new stores will pay no rent until March 2001. Besides free rent, some of the construction work at the shops was paid for by the Naha Chamber of Commerce.
